One of the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series’ most unique venues, Bruton Smith rebuilt these hallowed grounds into a world-class drag racing facility for the 2001 NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals. The track was raised 21 feet from its previous design, the grandstands were built into the side of the mountain, a tunnel connected the pits with the spectator seats, and the famous curve in the shutdown area was straightened out.

“Overall, it’s one of those facilities that elevated the bar of what drag racing facilities should be.” —Warren Johnson, 2001.

Hear Cruz Pedregon and Mary Reid in the TV booth call the rounds leading up to the finals. See Jim Yates vs. Greg Anderson in Pro Stock, Ron Capps vs. Al Hofmann in Funny Car, and Tony Schumacher vs Doug Kalitta in the Top Fuel final—one of whom would go on to be the first repeat winner of the year.
